On 10 June, politicians, public officials and experts gathered in Solna to learn about the latest developments in heating systems for football fields – a key factor in enabling football activities all year round. The seminar was organised by the Stockholm Football Association and Robin Johansson from its facilities department.
EKA contributed with two presentations: Jörgen Rogstam showed how to choose the right heat source based on local conditions, while Simon Bolteau explained how the technical structure of the field – including insulation, drainage and control systems – affects performance, energy use and playability.
Why install pitch heating under a football filed?
Field heating, or ground heating, keeps the football field playable even during the colder months. Without heating, the ground can become rock hard or covered in ice and snow, making play more difficult and increasing the risk of injury. With field heating, training sessions and matches can take place all year round. For many municipalities, this is a more cost-effective alternative to indoor arenas or temporary covered halls, especially when available space and playing times are limited.
From tents to field heating technology – the City of Stockholm’s journey
A particularly interesting contribution came from FSK — Pye Seaton, Stina and David — who shared the City of Stockholm’s journey from tent structures to field heating solutions. This development was made possible thanks to early investigations by KJ Byggadmin and further energy analyses by EKA. They also spoke about the five existing football fields with field heating and how the city is now planning for more modern, sustainable solutions.
Procurement, knowledge sharing, and confidence in the future
The seminar concluded with practical procurement tips from Karolin Elias at Adda, as well as a valuable exchange of experience between participants and experts. Among others, Michael Carlsson from Haninge Municipality shared their experiences of using heat pumps and geothermal storage as a heating solution for football fields.
