The F-gas Regulation is gradually reducing the availability of synthetic refrigerants. For existing systems, this could affect both supply and cost, while the number of viable options for new installations continues to decrease.
In this short video, Jörgen Rogstam discusses what this development could mean for the market and why natural refrigerants are becoming an increasingly obvious choice for new systems.
Could the F-gas Regulation lead to a shortage of synthetic refrigerants?
– Many refrigerants will be completely phased out in the relatively near future. Others will remain available for longer, but we know that the number of options on the market will become increasingly limited.
What could this mean for costs?
– A more limited supply will most likely also mean higher costs. In the future, the available volumes of synthetic refrigerants will roughly need to cover the servicing needs of the systems that are already in operation today.
This means that the refrigerants that remain available may increasingly be needed simply to keep existing systems running.
And what does this mean for new installations?
– For new installations, there will not be many synthetic alternatives left. Natural refrigerants will therefore, in practice, become the obvious choice going forward.
For anyone planning a new refrigeration or heat pump system, there is therefore good reason to consider future availability, cost and the ability to service the system throughout its entire lifetime.
